Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has rejected the proposed salary increase for political officeholders, saying it is unjustifiable at a time most Nigerians are battling economic hardship.
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) announced on Tuesday that it was considering a review of salaries for the president, vice-president, governors and other top officials.
In a post on his X handle, Obi condemned the move, describing it as “provocative, insensitive and a shameless grab for more at the expense of Nigeria’s struggling majority.”
He argued that political leadership should be about service, not self-enrichment, and urged the commission to focus on improving the welfare of public servants and security personnel, especially police officers, who he said are “grossly underpaid and overworked.”
Obi called on the federal government to prioritise the needs of ordinary Nigerians, particularly civil servants, warning that a salary hike for politicians would only deepen public anger and distrust in leadership.
