FIFA strips South Africa of World Cup qualifier win over ineligible player

FIFA has penalised the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding ineligible midfielder Teboho Mokoena in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

The match, played on March 21, 2025, will now be awarded to Lesotho with a 3-0 scoreline after FIFA ruled that SAFA breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the competition regulations.

In addition to forfeiting the result, SAFA was fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£9,000), while Mokoena received a formal warning.

FIFA confirmed on Monday that the decision has been communicated to the parties involved. The South African body has ten days to request a full written ruling and retains the right to appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.
