The Dangote Group has reacted to the death of Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of reality TV star Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, who died from complications sustained in a road accident involving one of the company’s trucks.
In a statement released on its official X handle Sunday night, the conglomerate described Ruth’s passing as “a tragic loss” and extended condolences to the grieving family.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Otabor, who was injured in the recent road incident involving one of our trucks in Auchi, Edo State. On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” the company said.
The accident occurred on August 13 near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, where Ruth had just graduated. She suffered severe injuries after being hit by a Dangote truck and later underwent amputation.
According to the company, officials and insurance partners had been providing financial and medical support to the family since the incident. Plans had also been made to fly Ruth to India for advanced treatment, but she succumbed to complications before the transfer could be carried out.
Her death was formally confirmed in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, at about 6:30 a.m. by the family’s lawyer, Eko Solicitors & Advocates.
Dangote Group reaffirmed that safety, accountability, and compassion remain at the heart of its operations, promising to continue strengthening measures to prevent such tragedies.
