Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday evening at his private residence in Daura, Katsina State, following a solemn funeral ceremony attended by dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria.
The burial, conducted in line with Islamic rites, was led by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami. President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, members of Buhari’s family, the Emir of Daura, top government officials, political party representatives, and members of the diplomatic corps were present to pay their last respects.
Earlier in the day, Buhari’s remains arrived in Daura, where they were received by President Tinubu; Vice President Shettima; Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló; Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine; former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou; and former Vice President Osinbajo.
A military honour guard of nine senior officers solemnly carried the national flag-draped casket, which was wheeled in a slow ceremonial procession to the hymn, “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.” The cortege passed through a guard of honour made up of six officers and 96 soldiers from the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Following the burial, President Tinubu received condolences at the late president’s residence from high-profile dignitaries and associates who came to honour Buhari’s legacy.
