The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has begun announcing results from the July 12 local government elections, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerging dominant across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Despite a low voter turnout, the elections held peacefully across 13,325 polling units, with minimal incidents reported. A total of 57 Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship positions and 376 Councillorship seats were contested.
Fifteen out of 19 registered political parties fielded candidates, with the APC being the only party to contest every available seat. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) contested in 45 councils and 259 wards, while the Labour Party (LP) fielded candidates in 22 LGAs and 130 wards. Other parties like ZLP, AAC, AA, and YPP participated in fewer areas.
In Lagos Island LGA, APC’s Taiwo Oyekan won the chairmanship race with 28,385 votes, defeating PDP’s Ajibade Olusegun, who polled 1,271 votes.
In Amuwo-Odofin, APC’s Prince Lanre Sanusi (PLS) recorded a landslide victory with 24,926 votes, far ahead of LP’s Engr. Seyi Ipinlaye, who secured 1,962 votes.
Agege LGA also saw a sweeping win for the APC, as Tunde Azeez, popularly known as “Disco,” clinched the chairmanship with 31,503 votes. APM and ZLP candidates trailed with just 86 and 10 votes, respectively.
Candidates and officials react
APC’s chairmanship candidate in Yaba LCDA, Adebayo Adefuye, praised the process as smooth and credible. He unveiled his “Yaba tuntun” (New Yaba) agenda and welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to enforce local government financial autonomy.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu thanked residents for participating peacefully in the polls. In a statement titled “Thank You, Lagos, for Peaceful Local Government Elections,” the governor applauded the orderly conduct of voters and the professionalism of security agencies, the media, and electoral officials.
“You have shown that democracy thrives when people actively participate in elections,” Sanwo-Olu said, while urging all candidates and stakeholders to remain calm as final results continue to trickle in.
With additional announcements expected, the APC appears poised to maintain its political dominance at the grassroots level in Lagos State.
