In a decisive move to combat drug abuse among young people, the Executive Chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Moyosore Adebanjo, on Wednesday hosted officials from the Lagos State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Council Secretariat.
The meeting, held ahead of International Youth Day, is part of Hon. Adebanjo’s broader agenda to promote youth development and address drug-related challenges within the community.
During his remarks, the Chairman emphasized the urgent need for early sensitization and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to curb the growing menace of drug abuse. He revealed plans to establish a containerized NDLEA office within the LCDA, a strategic initiative aimed at ensuring the agency’s sustained presence and fostering deeper engagement with residents.
The NDLEA delegation, led by Commander Abubakar Liman Wali, commended Hon. Adebanjo for his proactive leadership. Commander Wali described the proposed local NDLEA office as a welcome development that would enhance the agency’s operational effectiveness in the area.
He also reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to partnering with local governments in the fight against drug abuse, stressing the importance of collective action in securing a healthier and safer future for the youth.
As part of the broader sensitization initiative, the agency plans to engage local youths through awareness talks highlighting the dangers of drug use, as well as the long-term implications for health and society. To reinforce the message, a series of recreational and interactive activities will also be introduced to foster dialogue and participation among young attendees.
Commander Wali emphasized the importance of sustained action, noting that consistent enforcement and a visible presence would serve as a deterrent to drug-related activities, rather than driving them underground.
In recognition of his unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and public safety, the NDLEA presented a token of appreciation to Hon. Moyosore Adebanjo, acknowledging his support for the agency’s mission and his forward-thinking leadership.
