Martinelli’s stoppage-time goal denies City victory

Arsenal salvaged a point in dramatic fashion on Sunday, September 21, 2025, as Gabriel Martinelli struck in stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw against Manchester City in their Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

City looked on course for victory after Erling Haaland fired them ahead in the 9th minute, finishing off a quick counter-attack orchestrated by Tijjani Reijnders. Pep Guardiola’s men then slowed the tempo, defending compactly and restricting Arsenal to few clear chances in the first half.

The Gunners found renewed energy after the break when Mikel Arteta introduced Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze. The substitutes tilted momentum, with Eze eventually providing the lofted pass that Martinelli controlled before lifting past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 93rd minute.

The late equaliser keeps Arsenal second in the standings, behind leaders Liverpool, while Manchester City will see the result as two points dropped.

Martinelli’s intervention underlined Arsenal’s resilience, while Guardiola’s men face questions over their conservative approach after taking the early lead.
