It was a night of high drama in the Carabao Cup as League Two side Grimsby Town delivered one of the shocks of the season, sending Manchester United crashing out.
United manager Rúben Amorim rolled the dice at half-time, bringing on Bruno Fernandes, Matthijs de Ligt and Bryan Mbeumo in a bid to swing the tie. The change almost worked. Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 75th minute with a crisp finish, only for Harry Maguire to rescue United with a towering header.
The game spilled into penalties, where Andre Onana seemed the hero after saving Clarke Oduor’s spot-kick. But the advantage evaporated when Grimsby goalkeeper James Pym stopped Matheus Cunha. Sudden death ensued, and fate dealt United the cruelest hand: Mbeumo, the scorer in regulation, struck the crossbar to hand victory to the Mariners.
As jubilant Grimsby fans flooded the pitch and later took to the streets in celebration, Manchester United were left nursing yet another bruising cup exit. For Amorim, the questions are only beginning.
