The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.
The revered monarch died on Sunday, marking the end of an era in one of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional institutions.
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona was installed as the Awujale of Ijebuland on April 2, 1960, making him one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in Nigeria’s history. He hailed from the House of Anikinaiya, a royal lineage of the Ijebu Kingdom in Ogun State.
Throughout his remarkable reign, Oba Adetona was widely respected for his wisdom, progressive leadership, and contributions to the cultural and political development of the Ijebu people and Nigeria at large.
His passing comes just hours after the announcement of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a long-time friend and ally of the monarch.
Further details on funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the royal family and the Ogun State government.
