Lagos lawmakers reject Obasa, insist Meranda remains speaker

Ousted Lagos State Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, returned to the assembly complex on Thursday, escorted by security operatives. His return coincided with the recent withdrawal of security aides assigned to Mojisola Meranda, the current speaker.

Addressing journalists, lawmakers reaffirmed their support for Meranda’s leadership and called for an intervention from the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Lagos.

Stephen Ogundipe, representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 1, spoke on behalf of the lawmakers, expressing their displeasure over the unfolding events.

“Our leaders urged us to remain calm, but we are shocked by what is happening today,” Ogundipe said. “We have chosen to abide by the law, and we expect the same respect in return. We represent our constituencies, and any leadership decision should involve us, not be reduced to this charade.”

He further emphasized that the lawmakers had remained law-abiding and loyal to the state, urging the party’s leadership to address the crisis promptly.

“We want to be respected as elected representatives,” he added. “This situation cannot continue.”
