The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, says his fight is against bad governance in the country – not President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Obi spoke in Abuja on Monday while fielding questions from journalists during his visit to the Anglican hospital diocese of Kubwa and the Anglican Comprehensive Secondary School in the Kubwa area of the nation’s capital.
“I and the president are not fighting,” he said.
“I’m not fighting anybody. My fight is against bad governance, hunger, poverty, out-of-school children, and people not having health services.”
Obi lamented the country’s health coverage, saying most Nigerians do not have insurance.
He added that Nigerian politicians concentrate on politics and pay little attention to what would improve the welfare of the people.
“This country has less than 10 percent health insurance. It should be 100 percent,” he said.
The former presidential candidate has consistently criticised Tinubu’s administration and its policies.
In April, Obi claimed that Nigeria has more poor people than Indonesia, China, and Vietnam.
Afterwards, Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor, criticised Obi for what he called a “disturbing pattern of behaviour” which “de-markets Nigeria on the global stage”.
The Lagos governor said given Obi’s performance while in office, he has lost the moral authority to criticise the Tinubu administration.
Obi defended his comment, saying highlighting Nigeria’s challenges does not amount to demarketing the country.
