Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly proposed a political alliance with Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, offering him the position of vice president on the condition of a single-term presidency.
According to multiple credible sources familiar with the ongoing coalition talks—who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter—the proposal was initially discussed during a private meeting between Atiku and Obi earlier this year in the United Kingdom.
The sources revealed that Atiku is committed to serving only one four-year term if elected, with the plan for Obi to be his running mate. While Obi has reportedly accepted the offer in principle, he is currently seeking the support of his loyal base before making a final commitment.
This would not be the first time the duo has teamed up. In the 2019 presidential election, Obi ran as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though they lost to then-incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
On March 20, Atiku, Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and several other prominent politicians announced the formation of a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. The move triggered nationwide discussion on the possibility of opposition unity, drawing mixed reactions from political observers.
Despite the public announcement, nearly two months have passed without a formal update, as both the PDP and LP continue to wrestle with internal divisions that could affect the coalition’s prospects.
